依巴谷用渾儀進行測量,至少獲得了850顆恆星的位置,但他使用何種坐標系是有爭議的。托勒密在《天文學大成》中的星表是從依巴谷星表衍生出來的,給出的是黃道坐標。然而,德蘭布雷(Delambre)在他1817年著作的《古代天文學史》(Histoire de l'Astronomie Ancienne)中給出結論,依巴谷知道並使用了赤道座標。但是,奧托·紐格伯爾在他1975年著作的《古代天文數學史》中,對此一結論提出了質疑的挑戰。依巴谷似乎用了黃道坐標系和赤道坐標系統的組合:在他對歐多克索斯的評論中,他提供了恆星的極距離,這相當於赤道系統中的赤緯、赤經,混用著黃經、極經度,而不是天球的緯度。
