公眾科學

公眾科學（Citizen Science），公民科學或群智科學，是指"公眾參與的科學研究", 包括非職業的科學家、科學愛好者和志願者參與的科研活動, 範圍涵蓋科學問題探索、新技術發展、數據收集與分析等。從形式上看，公眾科學已被定義為「系統地收集和分析數據；開發技術；對自然現象的測試，以及這些活動的散發由主要基於業餘愛好的研究者。」^[1]其成果通常是通過提高科學界的能力，以及增加公眾對科學的理解來推動科學研究的進步。

著名的公民科學家包括艾薩克·牛頓、弗洛倫斯·南丁格爾、班傑明·富蘭克林和查爾斯·達爾文^[2]。 在《新科學人》雜誌和提高酸雨意識的運動中可以找到"公眾科學(CS)"一詞的首次使用。公眾科學發現的一個例子是1781年威廉·赫歇爾首次觀測到的天王星^[3]。

公眾科學項目一般由公眾和科學家合作發起。^[4] 公眾科學有時也包含在諸如「公眾參與科學研究」和參與行動研究（英語：Participatory action research）。^[5]

倫理

已經被發表了各種研究，探討了公眾科學的倫理，包括智慧財產權和項目設計等問題。（例如^{[6][7][8][9][10]}）公民科學協會（CSA），總部設在康乃爾鳥類學實驗室和歐洲公民科學協會（ECSA），總部設在柏林自然博物館，設有道德和原則工作組^[11][12]。

歷史

「公眾科學」是一個相當新的名詞，但它是一個舊的做法。在20世紀之前，科學往往是紳士科學家，業餘或自費研究人員的追求，如艾薩克·牛頓爵士，班傑明·富蘭克林和查爾斯·達爾文等等。然而，到20世紀中葉，科學被大學和政府研究實驗室雇用的研究人員主導。 到了1970年代，這種轉變受到了質疑。 哲學家保羅·費耶阿本德(Paul Feyerabend)呼籲「科學民主化」^[13]。 生物化學家埃爾文·查戈夫（Erwin Chargaff）主張在笛卡爾，牛頓，萊布尼茲，布豐，和達爾文科學中以自然愛好的業餘愛好者回歸科學；主導科學的應該是「業餘愛好而非金錢偏見的技術官僚」^[14]。

2016年的一項研究表明，公眾科學的最大影響是生物學，保護和生態學研究，主要用作收集和分類數據的方法^[15]。

業餘天文學

業餘天文學家可以建立他們自己的設備，可以舉辦星空饗宴和聚會，例如Stellafane。

長久以來，天文學的領域充滿了業餘天文學家，一直到今天仍然一樣^[16]。

整體而言，業餘天文學家觀察各種天體和現象，有時也建造自己的設備。業餘天文學家的目標通常包括月球、行星、恆星、彗星、流星雨和各種各樣的深空天體，像是星團、星系、和星雲。彗星和恆星的觀測還用於衡量當地的人造輝光^[17][18]。業餘天文學的一個分支，業餘天文攝影，涉及到夜空的拍照。許多愛好這專注於特定的天體、天體的類型、或事件的類型，進行他們感興趣的觀測^[19][20]。

美國變星觀測者協會自1911年以來，蒐集變星的資料，進行教育和專業分析，並鼓勵其成員參與公眾天文和其它的網站^[21]。

鳥類學

公眾科學項目越來越注重為科學研究提供益處^[22][23][24]。北美鳥類物候學計劃（英語：North American Bird Phenology Program）（歷史上稱為鳥類遷徙和分布記錄）可能是公眾在美國收集鳥類信息的最早集體努力^[25]。 該計劃的歷史可以追溯到1883年，由韋爾斯·伍德布里奇·庫克(Wells Woodbridge Cooke)發起。 庫克在北美範圍建立了一個觀察員網絡，以收集鳥類遷徙記錄。 奧杜邦學會（The National Audubon Society）的聖誕節鳥類統計（Christmas Bird Count；縮寫CBC）始於1900年，是公眾科學長期存在的另一個例子，一直持續到今天。 公眾科學家幫助收集將由專業研究人員分析的數據，並可用於產生鳥類種群和生物多樣性指標。

地震學

自1975年以來，為了改善地震探測和收集有用信息，歐洲-地中海地震中心（英語：European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre）監測地震目擊者對其網站的訪問，並依賴Facebook和Twitter^[26]。

水文學

公眾科學已被用於提供水文學（流域科學）的寶貴數據，特別是洪水風險，水質和水資源管理^[27][28]。 網際網路使用和智慧型手機的擁有的增長使用戶能夠使用收集和分享實時洪水風險信息，例如利用社交媒體和基於網絡的表格。

淡水魚類

水族館愛好者及其各自的組織對魚類保護充滿熱情，並且通常比科學研究人員更了解特定的魚類物種和群體^[29]。他們通過發現新物種、維護包含數千種物種（例如鯰魚^[30]、 墨西哥淡水魚^[31]、 鱂魚^[32]、 慈鯛 ^[33] ）生態信息的廣泛資料庫，在淡水魚類保護中發揮了重要作用，並成功地為保護項目保留和提供瀕危和野外滅絕的物種^[34][35]。

農業

農民參與實驗在農業科學中有著悠久的傳統^[36]。 公民參與糧食系統不同部分的機會很多^[37]。公民科學被積極用於氣候適應的作物品種選擇，涉及數千名農民^[38]。
