昌江上游名為南寧河、閶江[1]，發源於徽州祁門縣東北部的大洪嶺西南麓，先向南後折向西南，進入江西省境內流向西南流，始名昌江。先後流經浮梁縣、景德鎮市和鄱陽縣，在鄱陽縣姚公渡匯合樂安河，成為鄱江。
全長267公里，其中徽州境內長85公里。總流域面積7036平方公里。多年平均流量181立方米／秒。支流有瀝水河、北河、東河、西河、南河和濱田水。
