美国农业科学的革命开始于《{{le|1887年哈奇法案|Hatch Act of 1887》,其中也用到“农业科学”的词语。哈奇法案是因为农民的关注而推动,想要了解早期人工肥料的组成。1917年的《史密斯-休斯法案(英语:Smith-Hughes Act)》将农业教育回到其职业根源,不过已建立了科学的基础[6]。1906年之后,美国用在农业科学上的公共支出比私人或企业支出要多,此一情形持续了44年[7]:xxi。1960年起,在已开发国家及开发中国家的农业集约化(常称为绿色革命),其进展和选择可快速大量成长的作物及动物有关,也和人工肥料及农药的引入有关。
