爪兽属

爪兽属（英语：Chalicotherium）是奇蹄目爪兽科底下的一属，分布于渐新世晚期至上新世早期（28.6—3.6百万年前）的欧洲、非洲与亚洲，共存活了 25 百万年。和其他爪兽科的成员一样，为外型奇特的草食动物，长达2米，具有修长带爪的前肢与粗短适合承受重量的后肢（英语：Hindlimb）。模式种为 Chalicotherium goldfussi，生存于中新世至上新世的欧洲，由约翰·雅各布·考普（英语：Johann Jakob Kaup）于1833年发表。

C. goldfussi 的牙齿

爪兽属的外型像马，头骨细长，前肢比后肢长，背部向下倾斜。牙齿构造特殊，脚没有蹄，三趾末端有强壮的爪。爪的发展有可能与进食习惯有关，用前爪把树枝拉下来，或挖掘树根和块茎进食。

坐骨的硬皮意味着动物会长时间坐在他们的臀部上，方便喂养。指骨背侧长出软垫，可能是关节行走的证据，也可以是为了避免消耗爪子，以收集饲料或用作强大的防御武器。

这些特征都与地懒，大猩猩和大熊猫有所相似。
