Amerika Profesyonel Basketbol Ligi NBA’de üniversite oyuncuları ve yabancı oyuncuların NBA takımlarında oynayabilmesi için yapılan seçme sistemidir. Genellikle bir önceki sezonun en kötü takımları üst sıralarda seçme hakkına sahip olurlar.
Bu zamana kadar ilk sırada seçilip yılın en değerli oyuncusu ödülünü alan sporcular; Chicago Bulls’lu Derrick Rose,Los Angeles Lakers'li Lebron James, Lakers pivotu Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Oscar Robertson, Bill Walton, Allen Iverson, Shaquille O'neal, David Robinson, Hakeem Olajuwon, Tim Duncan, Magic Johnson’dır.
2002 yılında Çinli pivot Yao Ming, Houston Rockets tarafından birinci sırada seçilerek NBA tarihinde ilk defa hem ABD vatandaşı hem de NCAA tecrübesi olmayan bir oyuncu olararak seçmeler de birinci sırada seçilmiş oldu. 2006 yılında İtalyan pivot Andrea Bargnani 2005 yılında Andrew Bogut (Avustralya), 1997 yılında Tim Duncan Virjin Adaları 1998 yılında Nijeryalı pivot Michael Olowokandi, 1978 yılında Mychal Thompson (Bahama), 1984 yılında Hakeem Olajuwon (Nijerya), birinci sırada seçilen diğer oyunculardır.

- David Thompson played in the American Basketball Association (ABA) in the 1975–76 season and did not play in the NBA until 1976. His rookie statistics are from the 1976-77.[46]
- Hakeem Olajuwon was born in Nijerya, but became a naturalized United States citizen in 1993. When he arrived in the United States, the University of Houston incorrectly spelled his first name "Akeem". Olajuwon used that spelling until March 9, 1991, when he announced that he would add an H, saying, "I'm not changing the spelling of my name, I'm correcting it."[55][56]
- David Robinson did not play in the NBA until 1989 due to commitments to the United States Navy.[62] His rookie statistics are from the 1989-90.[63]
- Tim Duncan is a United States citizen by birth, as are all natives of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Because of this citizenship arrangement, Duncan has played for the U.S. internationally.[73]
- Elton Brand shared Rookie of the Year honors with Steve Francis of the Houston Rockets.[76]
