Ang The Merchant of Venice ay isa sa pinakasikat na komedya ni William Shakespeare bagamat ito ay napapabilang sa mga kontrobersiyal niyang dula. Tumatalakay ito sa unibersal na paksa ng pananampalataya ng Hudyo at Kristyano, at ang kaawang kapalaran ng nagpapautang na Hudyong si Shylock.
Isang pagsasalin ang ginawa Rolando Tinio noong 1977 at pinamagatan niya itong Ang Negosyante ng Venecia.[1]
Ito ay ibinatay sa likha ni Christopher Marlowe ang Hudyo ng Malta, at mga koleksiyon ng kuwento sa kasaysayang midyibal ang Gesta Ronarum.
Sa kagustuhan ni Bossanio na makuha ang puso ng kanyang iniibig na si Portia humingi sya ng tulong sa kanyang matalik na kaibigan na si Antonio. Ang sisidlan ginto ay nakuha ng Prinsipe ng Morroco na gayon na lamang ang tuwa ni Portia gayung ayaw nya sa kulay nitong balat, Ang pangalawang dumayo ay ang Prinsipe ng Aragon nagkamali sya ng pagpili it Dhailo ay isang pilak na sisidlan na kumakatawan din sa kanyang pagkatao isang payaso.
