Një tiran (nga greqishtja e lashtë τύραννος (túrannos) 'sundimtar absolut'), në përdorimin modern të fjalës në anglisht, është një sundimtar absolut që është i pakufizuar nga ligji ose ai që ka uzurpuar sovranitetin e një sunduesi legjitim. Shpesh të portretizuar si mizorë, tiranët mund të mbrojnë pozicionet e tyre duke përdorur mjete represive.[1][2] Termi origjinal grek nënkuptonte një sovran absolut që erdhi në pushtet pa të drejtë kushtetuese, megjithatë fjala kishte një konotacion neutral gjatë periudhave arkaike dhe të hershme klasike. Megjithatë, filozofi grek Platoni e pa tyrannos si një fjalë negative dhe për shkak të ndikimit vendimtar të filozofisë në politikë,
Platoni e konsideroi tiraninë "çrregullimin e katërt dhe më të keq të një shteti". Tiranëve u mungon "vetë aftësia që është instrumenti i gjykimit" - arsyeja. Njeriu tiranik është i robëruar sepse pjesa më e mirë e tij (arsyeja) është robëruar, po ashtu edhe shteti tiran është i robëruar, sepse edhe atij i mungon arsyeja dhe rregulli.[3]
Filozofët Platoni dhe Aristoteli përkufizuan një tiran si një person që sundon pa ligj, duke përdorur metoda ekstreme dhe mizore si kundër popullit të tij ashtu edhe ndaj të tjerëve. Enciklopedia e përkufizoi termin si një uzurpator i pushtetit sovran që i bën "nënshtetasit e tij viktima të pasioneve dhe dëshirave të padrejta, të cilat ai i zëvendëson me ligje".[4] Në fund të shekullit të pestë dhe të katërt para Krishtit, u ngrit një lloj i ri tirani, ai që kishte mbështetjen e ushtrisë - veçanërisht në Siçili.
