Kompania u themelua Në 1911 si Computing Tabulating Recording Corporation përmes një bashkimi të katër kompanive: Tabulating Machine Company, International Time Recording Company, Computing Scale Corporation, dhe Bundy Manufacturing Company.[3][4] CTR miratoi emrin International Business Machines në 1924, duke përdorur më herët një emër të caktuar nga një filial i CTR në Kanada dhe më vonë në Amerikën Jugore. Kulturën e saj të veçantë dhe të quajtur prodhim i ka dhënë pseudonimin Big Blue.
