Goodland is a city in Sherman County, Kansas, United States.[1] It is also the county seat of Sherman County. In 2020, 4,465 people lived there.[3] It was named after Goodland, Indiana.[4] Goodland has the Northwest Kansas Technical College.

Goodland is at 39°21′3″N 101°42′37″W (39.3508330, −101.7101722). It has an elevation of 3,681 feet (1,122 m).[1] It is on the south side of the Middle Fork of Sappa Creek, which is part of the Republican River watershed, in the High Plains region of the Great Plains. It is at the intersection of Interstate 70 and K-27 in northwest Kansas. Goodland is about 17 miles (27 km) east of the Colorado state line, 176 miles east-southeast of Denver, 265 miles (426 km) northwest of Wichita, and 383 miles (616 km) west of Kansas City.[5]
The United States Census Bureau says that the city has a total area of 4.51 square miles (11.68 km2). Of that, 4.50 square miles (11.65 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water.[2]
Because Goodland has a higher elevation, Goodland has stronger wind and more snow than other places in Kansas. Wind speed averages 13 mph (21 km/h).[6] On average, Goodland gets 19.75 inches (502 mm) of precipitation every year. Goodland gets about 41.9 inches (1,064 mm) of snow per year.[7] On average, January is the coldest month, and July is both the hottest month and the wettest month. The hottest temperature ever in Goodland was 111 °F (44 °C) in 1940; the coldest temperature ever was −27 °F (−33 °C) in 1989.[8]

The 2020 census says that there were 4,465 people, 1,891 households, and 1,103 families living in Goodland. Of the households, 64.4% owned their home and 35.6% rented their home.
The median age was 36.8 years. Of the people, 82.8% were White, 2.2% were Black, 0.4% were Asian, 0.3% were Native American, 6.5% were from some other race, and 7.7% were two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14.9% of the people.[3][9]
The 2010 census says that there were 4,489 people, 1,985 households, and 1,161 families living in Goodland.[10]
The Goodland Star-News is the city's only newspaper. It is published twice per week.[11] Four radio stations are licensed to and/or broadcast from Goodland. KLOE broadcasts a full service News/Talk format on 730 AM.[12][13] KKCI plays a Classic Rock format, and they broadcast on 102.5 FM.[14][15] KWGB is licensed to Colby, Kansas, and they broadcast from Goodland on 97.9 FM. They play country music.[14][16] KGCR broadcasts on 107.7 FM from near Brewster, Kansas. They are licensed to Goodland. They play Christian Contemporary music.[14][17]
Goodland is in the Wichita-Hutchinson, Kansas television market.[18] CBS affiliate KBSL-DT is licensed to Goodland, and they broadcast on digital channel 10.[19][20]
Due to Goodland and the rest of Sherman County observing Mountain time, prime-time television programming airs from 6 to 9 p.m., instead of 7 to 10 like in the Central time zone.
A reproduction of Vincent van Gogh's painting 3 Sunflowers in a Vase was created in 2001 by artist Cameron Cross. It is 80 feet tall. After it was built, the weather damaged it. Cross came back in 2012 to repaint it using brighter paint.[21][22]
