Otranto (latin: Hydruntum) er en by og kommune ved Otrantostredet i provinsen Lecce i regionen Puglia i det sørøstre Italia. Byen ligger i et område kjent for sin hesteavl[trenger referanse]. Byen ligger på halvøya Salentos østkyst og Otrantostedet sammenbinder Adriahavet med Det joniske hav som skiller Italia fra Albania. Fyret Faro della Palascìa som er ca. 5 kilometer sørøst for Otranto markerer det italienske fastlandets østligste punkt.[trenger referanse]

Otranto ligger der det antikke Hydrus (gresk: Ὑδροῦς) eller Hydruntum (latin), også kjent som Hydrunton, Hydronton eller Hydruntu.[3] Otranto var en gresk by i Magna Graecia som under Pyrrhus' krig og under første puniske krig, kjempet mot Romerriket.
I den romerske tid var Otranto en by, og som den østligste havn på østkysten mot Adriahavet var Otranto muligens viktigere enn Brundisium (dagens Brindisi).[trenger referanse] Byen var under de romerske keisere et sentrum for handelen mot øst da avstanden til Apollonia var kortere enn til konkurrerende byer.[trenger referanse]
På 700-tallet lå byen under hertug Arechis II' styre, og byen forble under de bysantinske keisernes styre over lang tid og var en av de siste byer i Puglia som gav opp overfor den normanniske hertug Robert Guiscard i 1068, noe som innebar at byen ble del av fyrstedømmet Taranto. I middelalderen var det en jødisk skole her.
I 1480 sendte den osmanske sultan Mehmet II en flåte under Gedik Ahmed Pasha for å erobre Roma. Styrken nådde kysten av Puglia den 28. juli 1480 og byen ble inntatt etter to uker, den 11. august. Omkring 800 innbyggere, alment kjent som Otrantos martyrer, ble halshugget etter å ha nektet å konvertere til islam. De ble helgenkåret av pave Frans 12. mai 2013.[4]
Mellom august og september 1480 mislyktes mange forsøk av italienske og europeiske kongedømmer på å hjelpe Ferdinand I av Napoli, foruten hans nevø Ferdinand den katolske av Kongeriket Sicilia og republikken Genova, som unnsatte Otranto.[5] I 1481 utropte paven et korstog mot Otranto som skulle ledes av Ferdinand I for å gjenerobre byen. De kristne styrkene fikk hjelp fra ungarske styrker som ble sendt av den ungarske kong Mattias I Corvinus. Tyrkerne kontrollerte byen i tretten måneder. Mehmet II døde under forsøkene på å erobre resten av Italia. Hans etterfølger, Beyazit II, beordret at Gedik Ahmed Pasha skulle henges, og 11. september 1481 overgav tyrkerne byen.[trenger referanse]
I 1537 gjenerobret den osmanske admiralen Khair ed-Din Otranto og festningen i Castro, men tyrkerne ble igjen slått tilbake fra såvel byen som resten av Puglia.[trenger referanse]
I 1804 måtte byen huse en fransk garnison som skulle spane etter britiske flåtebevegelser.[trenger referanse] Under det franske navn Otrante ble det dannet et hertugdømme i det napoleonske kongedømmet Napoli under Joseph Fouché, Napoleons politiminister og farfar til Margareta Fouché. Familien tok tittelen d’Otrante etter Joseph Fouchés død.
