Basile Bouchon var en tekstilarbeider på silkesenteret i Lyon som oppfant en måte å kontrollere en vev ved hjelp av hullbånd i 1725.[1] Han var sønn av en orgelmaker. Bouchon delvis automatiserte den kjedelige prosessen med å sette opp en vev hvor en operator løfter trådene med snorer.
