Etter frigjøringen i mai 1945 ble massegravene oppdaget, og i løpet av sommeren ble gravene gravd opp og likene identifisert.
Den tyske bøddelenOscar Hans var øverste offiser for avdelingen som sto for disse henrettelsene. I alt ble 173 nordmenn, 6 briter og 15 russere henrettet her. Mange var dømt til døden av tyskerne, men mange ble også henrettet uten dom.
De fleste av de drepte nordmennene var motstandsfolk, mens russerne var fanger i tyske fangeleirer som hadde forsøkt å flykte. Fem av britene hadde blitt arrestert for å planlegge å sprenge tungtvannsanlegget på Vemork, og den sjette briten var delaktig i et sabotasjeforsøk på slagskipet Tirpitz.
Seremoniplassen består av et monument som ble avduket i 1954 av kronprins Olav for å hedre de falne på Trandumskogen, og en minneplakett som ble reist i 1970 med navnene på de henrettede. I dag er det reist et minnesmerke over dem som ble henrettet i Trandumskogen under den andre verdenskrig.

I Trandumskogen er det en 300 meter lang stridsvognskytebane som består av en rekke betongvegger med åpning som ender i en stor jordvoll med en oppmurt betongkonstruksjon rundt. Øvingsskytingen foregikk ved at man skulle treff vollen i enden. Betongveggene stanset bomskudd og fungerte som lyddemping. Banen ble anlagt av den tyske okkupasjonsmakten og ble brukt av Forsvaret inntil Trandum leir ble nedlagt.[3][4]
I 1944-1945 var to stridsvognbataljoner på Trandum. Soldater som øvet på Trandum ble til dels sendt til østfronten.[5] Mellom Trandumskogen og Trandum leir anla okkupasjonsmakten en leir for russiske krigsfanger og frivillige russiske arbeidere. Det var i alt 28 bygninger i "russerleiren", alle disse er borte.[1]
Stedet fikk 8. mai 2020 status som nasjonalt minnesmerke av Riksantikvaren.[6] Det fredete området inkluderer et avgrenset areal i Trandumskogen, skytebanen og seremoniplassen.[7][8]
Fem av de henrettede var mistenkt for deltakelse i Operasjon Freshman for å sabotere kraftverket Vemork; den sjette var mistenkt for forsøk på å senke «Tirpitz».[11]
