Flyplassen betjener hovedsakelig russiske turister på vei til Sotsji-området om sommeren, noe som gjør den til den flyplassen i Russland som har flest feriereisende. Rundt 1,35 millioner passasjerer besøkte flyplassen i 2006 (10,4% økning fra 2005).
3. mai 2006 styrtet Armavia rute 967, en Airbus A320, i Svartehavet underveis fra Zvartnots internasjonale lufthavn i Jerevan til Sotsji. Flyet styrtet under et landingsforsøk på Sotsji lufthavn og alle 113 ombord omkom.
25. desember 2016 styrtet en Tupolev Tu-154 to minutter etter avgang fra Sotsji ned i havet. Alle 92 ombord omkom.
