Mashhad (også skrevet Mashad og Meshed[2]) er Irans nest største by,[3] den ligger 850 kilometer nordøst for Teheran. Byen har 2,43 millioner innbyggere (2006)[4] og er hovedstad i Khorasan-provinsen.[5] Byen ligger 945 m.o.h. i en jordskjelvsone og jordskjelv i Bam (2008) hadde virkning også i Mashhad.[4] Byen er samferdselsknutepunkt (med jernbane til Teheran og veier til Afghanistan og Sentral-Asia) og tidligere et karavanesentrum.[6][7] Mashhad er sentrum for tradisjonell produksjon av tepper og tekstiler. Det er også forekomst av mineraler i omlandet.[8]

Byen er en av sjiittenes helligste byer og det viktigste pilegrimsmålet i Iran. Omkring 15 millioner pilegrimer besøker byen hvert år (i 1977 var tallet anslagsvis 3,5 millioner pilegrimer[9]). Også en del sunnimuslimer fra Sentral-Asia besøker byen. Mashhad er en kosmopolitisk by preget av nærheten til Sentral-Asia. Stiftelsen som ivaretar Imam Reza helligdommen, Astan-e Qods, er den største i den islamske verden.[5] I 818 ble Imam Ali al-Reza, den åttende sjia-imamen, forgiftet og døde som martyr i byen.[7] Mashhad har bymur og storslåtte moskeer[6] bl.a. Goharshadmoskéen.
Da sjiismen ble statsreligion i Persia på 1500-tallet fikk de hellige byene Mashhad og Qom økt betydning fordi de lå innenfor rikets grenser.[10]
Mashhad er befolket av majoriteten persere og minoriteter av kurdere og turkmenere.[11][12]
Det eldre navn for Mashhad var Sanabad (سناباد). Den ble endret til Mashhad under safavidenenes rike. Navnet Mashhad er fra arabisk, og betyr martyrium.[13][14] Byen er også stedet der Ali ar-Ridha (persisk Imam Reza), den åttende imam for sjiamuslimene, døde (ifølge sjiaene: led martyrdøden). Rezas mausoleum er her.[15]
Den gamle partianske by Patigrabanâ, som nevnes i Behistuninnskriftene (520 f.Kr.) fra akhemenidekeiseren Darius I, kan muligens ha vært der det senere Mashhad ligger.[16]
Tidlig på 800-tallet var Sanabad en småby som lå 24 km fra Tus. Humayd ibn Qahtaba, guvernøren av Khurasan, hadde sommerpalass der. I 808, da abbasidenes kalif Harun al-Rashid var på vei for å slå ned Rafi ibn al-Layths opprør i Transoxania, ble han syk, og døde her. Han ble begravet under Humayd ibn Qahtabas palass. Etter dette ble Dar al-Imarah kjent som Haruniyyeh-mausoleet. I 818 ble Ali al-Ridha drept av al-Ma'mun, og han ble begravet ved siden av Haruns grav.[17] Skjønt Mashhad skylder Tus sin kulturelle arv (og dens viktige skikkelser Nizam al-Mulk, Al-Ghazali, Ahmad Ghazali, Ferdowsi, Asadi Tusi, Shaykh Tusi og andre), skjelnet de tidlige arabiske geografer helt riktig mellom Mashhad og Tus som separate byer, som med den moderne tids kommunikasjoner ligger om lag 19 km fra hverandre.
