Makalu er verdens femte høyeste fjell med sine 8 463 moh. Fjellet ligger i Himalaya, på grensen mellom Nepal og Tibet.

Administrativt hører det i Nepal til Sankhuwasabha, Kosi sone i Østregionen. Fjellet ligger i Malaku Barun naturpark som dekker den vestligste delen av distriktet.
Makalu ble først besteget 15. mai 1955 av en fransk ekspedisjon ledet av Lionel Terray, Jean Couzy og Jean Franco. Klatrergruppen hadde året før prøvd å nå toppen, men ble nødt til å snu. Også en amerikansk gruppe prøvde i 1954 å bestige fjellet, men måtte snu grunnet en snøstorm.
Makalu er kjent som et av verdens vanskeligste fjell å klatre i, grunnet dets stupbratte vegger og knivskarpe kanter.
2004: Sven Gangdal besteg fjellet 21. april 2004.[1][2]
2014: Arvid Lennart Lahti besteg fjellet 18. mai 2014[3]
2019: Vibeke Andrea Sefland besteg fjellet 24. mai 2019[4]
