Kværner Brug (seinere Kværner Bruk) blei grunnlagt i Christiania (Oslo) i 1853 av Oluf Onsum. Onsum hadde kjøpt Kværner gård året før, og grunnla Kværner Brug i tilknytning til gårdens fossefall mellom Svartdalen og Kværnerdumpa i Lodalen, de såkalte Kværnerfossene. Onsum gikk konkurs i 1887, og et aksjeselskap ble dannet i 1892.

Bedriften begynte på 1860-tallet produksjon av støpejernsovner. Denne virksomheten ble skilt ut i 1916, og ble i 1920 Jøtul. Fra 1880 og særlig fra 1900 stor produksjon av turbiner og annet utstyr for kraftutbygging.[1]
Selskapets aksjer ble tatt opp til notering på Oslo Børs i 1967. I 1999 ble den tradisjonsrike industrivirksomheten i Lodalen nedlagt. På Kværners gamle tomt har OBOS utviklet og bygd boligområdet Kværnerbyen som nå har rundt 3 000 innbyggere fordelt på 10 borettslag og sameier.
Lokalisert til andre områder holdt Kværner det gående under etiketten Kværner ASA. I 2005 ble Kværner ASA fusjonert med Aker ASA. Fusjonen bærer navnet Aker Kværner ASA.
