Mil er i dag ei lengdeeining som svarer til 10 000 meter, eller 10 km. Mil er ikkje med i SI-systemet, men er avleidd av det. Ordet mil har opphav i dei romerske mille passus, tusen skritt, sjå romersk mil og engelsk mile.
Opphavleg hadde ein fleire typar mil i Skandinavia:
Landmilene blei markerte med milepålar, som òg blei sette opp på kvar fjerdedel av mila.
I Sverige blei ei einheitleg mil innført i 1699. Før dette hadde ho hatt ulik lengd ulike stader i landet. Nå blei ho definert til å utgjera 3600 stenger = 6000 famnar = 18 000 alner = 36 000 fot, som altså svarer til ca 10 688,54 meter.
Då det metriske systemet blei innført i Noreg i 1875 blei det for gamle avtalar o.a. bestemt at ei gammal mil skulle reknast lik 11 km. Samstundes blei det innført ei ny mil som skulle vere 10 kilometer eller 10 000 meter. Denne «nymila» er enno i bruk i Noreg og i Sverige, men ingen andre stader. Den danske mila er til dømes gått heilt ut av bruk.
