Songen vert fortalt frå førsteperson som ein fattig bonde, som i aukande desperasjon, fortel om uhella han har vore ute for. Det kom ikkje regn og avlingane hans døydde, loven hans brann ned og han enda opp i eit slumkvarter. Ein fagforeiningsmann dukkar opp og lover å betre ting. Rockekritikaren Greil Marcus kalla han «The Band sin song om øydelagde håp på landet» og meinte at «King Harvest» kanskje var den beste songen til Robertson og det beste dømet på korleis bandet skreiv og spelte songar.[1]
Songstrukturen er uvanleg: Versa, sungen av vokalisten Richard Manuel er energisk, medan refrenget (sungen av Manuel og Levon Helm) er rolegare, i motsetnad til ein vanleg songstruktur. Dette viser kanskje til det desperate, men usikre håpet som forteljaren har om fagforeininga.[2]
