Kapp Finisterre (galisisk Cabo Fisterra) er ei halvøy på vestkysten av Galicia i Spania.[1]
Kapp Finisterre vert stundom sagt å vere det vestlegaste punktet i Spania, men dette er ikkje korrekt. Kapp Finisterre ligg ved 42°52′57″N 9°16′20″W. Cabo da Nave ligg om lag 5 km nordvest for Kapp Finisterre ved 42°55′18″N 9°17′53″W. Punta Laxial på Kapp Touriñán er om lag 20 km lenger nord og ligg enno lenger vest, ved 43°02′54″N 9°18′00″W. Denne delen av Spania er heller ikkje det vestlegaste punktet på det europeiske kontinentet. Dette ligg i Cabo da Roca i Portugal, som ligg om lag 16,5 km lenger vest. Namnet Kapp Finisterre, som med Finistère i Frankrike, kjem frå det latinske namnet Finisterrae, som tyder «slutten på land».
Monte Facho er eit fjell på Kapp Finisterre med ei høgd på 238 meter over havet. Det står eit fyr på toppen av Monte Facho. Byen Fisterra ligg ved kysten like i nærleiken.
Det finst nokre flotte strender på Kapp Finisterra, inkludert O Rostro, Arnela, Mar de Fora, Langosteira, Riveira og Corbeiro. Rundt mange av strendene ligg bratte klipper som fører ned til «Mare Tenebrosum» (eller «det mørke havet» som var namnet på Atlanterhavet i mellomalderen].
Fleire klipper i området er knytt til religiøse segner, som «heilage steinar», «dei farga vinsteinane», «steinstolen» og grava til den keltiske kjerring-gudinna Orcabella.[2]
Kapp Finisterre er målet for mange pilegrimar som går Jakobsvegen, pilegrimsreisa til helgenskrinet etter apostelen Jakob i Katedralen Santiago de Compostela. Kapp Finisterre ligg om lag 90 km frå Santiago de Compostela. Ein nyare tradisjon er at pilegrimane brenn kleda eller skoa sine når reisa er over ved Kapp Finisterre.
Ein kjenner ikkje sikkert til opphavet til pilegrimsreisa til Finisterre. Ein trur dette kan ha opphav frå førkristen tid og var kanskje knytt til at ein trudde Finisterre var «verdas ende». Denne tradisjonen heldt ved gjennom mellomalderen. Somme pilegrimar held fram til Muxia, som ligg ein dagsmarsj unna.
Neset har vore eit kjent kjennemerke for mange som har reist frå Nord-Europa til Middelhavet, og fleire slag i nærleiken er kalla «slaget ved Kapp Finisterre». Kysten, som lokalt vert kalla Costa da Morte (Dødskysten),[3] har vore åstad for mange skipsforlis og skipbrot, mellom anna den britiske panserskipet HMS «Captain», då nesten 500 miste livet i 1870.
Breiddegraden som Kapp Finisterre ligg på vart nytta av Det britiske imperiet for å fastsetje breiddegraden som handelsskip ikkje kunne kryssa mellom dei britiske koloniane i Vestindia. Til dømes var det ikkje lov for eit skip å frakte sukkerrøyr direkte mellom britiske koloniar, til dømes mellom Jamaica og Nova Scotia. I staden for måtte sukkerrøyra fraktast frå Jamaica til England, og frå her til Nova Scotia.
