Een politieke thriller is een thriller waarin de strijd om politieke macht centraal staat. Er is een sterke overlapping met de spionage- en de paranoiathriller.
Het genre combineert politieke inhoud met een spannende plot.[1] Vaak gaat het verhaal over een gewone man die geconfronteerd wordt met een bolwerk van politieke corruptie en daar de strijd mee aangaat.[2] Soms moet een geplande aanslag op een politiek leider voorkomen worden. Het verhaal kan gebaseerd zijn op ware gebeurtenissen, zoals de moord op president Kennedy of het Watergateschandaal.
De politieke thriller ontwikkelde zich tot een zelfstandig genre ten tijde van de Koude Oorlog. The Quiet American (1955) van Graham Greene gaat over de Amerikaanse inmenging in het Vietnam van de jaren 1950. In The Manchurian Candidate (1959) van Richard Condon krijgt een onschuldige man te maken met een communistische samenzwering. The Day of the Jackal (1971) van Frederick Forsyth is gebaseerd op waargebeurde feiten: een verijdeld plan voor een aanslag op Charles de Gaulle. Andere schrijvers van politieke thrillers zijn John le Carré, Robert Ludlum, Tom Clancy en Jeffrey Archer.
