അഫ്ഘാനിസ്ഥാന്റെ വടക്കു കിഴക്കു ഭാഗത്ത് കുണ്ടുസ് പ്രവിശ്യയിൽ, കോക്ച, അമു ദാര്യ എന്നീ നദികളുടെ സംഗമസ്ഥാനത്തുള്ള ഒരു പുരാതന ആവാസകേന്ദ്രമാണ് അയ് ഖാനും. ബി.സി.ഇ. 4 ആം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൽ അലക്സാണ്ടറാണ് ഇവിടത്തെ നഗരം സ്ഥാപിച്ചതെന്നു കരുതുന്നു[1]. ഗ്രീക്കോ ബാക്ട്രിയൻ സാമ്രാജ്യകാലത്തെ ഒരു പ്രധാനനഗരമായിരുന്നു ഇത്.
ഇവിടത്തെ പുരാവസ്തുശേഖരം മൂലം പത്തൊമ്പതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ തുടക്കം മുതൽ സഞ്ചാരികളുടെ പ്രിയപ്പെട്ട ലക്ഷ്യമായിരുന്നു ഇത്. ഒരു അഫ്ഘാൻ രാജാവിന്റെ നായട്ടുസംഘത്തിന് ഈ പ്രദേശത്തുനിന്ന് പുരാതനകാലത്തെ ഏതോ ഒരു പുരാവസ്തു ലഭിച്ചതിനെത്തുടർന്ന് 1960 കാലത്ത് ഫ്രഞ്ച് പുരാവസ്തുഗവേഷകർ ഇവിടെ കൂടുതൽ ഖനനം നടത്തുകയും കൂടുതൽ പുരാവസ്തുക്കൾ ചികഞ്ഞെടുക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. കിഴക്കൻ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽ ഏറ്റവുമധികം ഗ്രീക്ക് പുരാവസ്തുക്കൾ ലഭിച്ച പ്രദേശമാണ് അയ് ഖാനും[1].
ഇവിടത്തെ പട്ടണത്തിലെ വാസ്തുശിൽപ്പരീതി ഗ്രീക്ക് ശൈലിയിലാണെങ്കിലും ഇവിടത്തെ കൊട്ടാരം അക്കാമെനിഡ് വാസ്തുശില്പമാതൃകയിലുള്ളതാണ്. നഗരത്തിലെ ചുറ്റുമതിലിനകത്തെ വിസ്തൃതി 1800x1500 മീറ്റർ ആയിരുന്നു. ഒരു അക്രോപോളിസ് (ഉയർന്ന കോട്ട), ആയോധനപരിശീലനകേന്ദ്രം, ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങൾ, 6000-ത്തോളം പേർക്കിരിക്കാവുന്ന ഒരു കൊട്ടക (theatre), കല്ലുകൊണ്ടുള്ള ഒരു ജലധാര തുടങ്ങിയവ ഇവിടെയുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
ചുറ്റുവട്ടത്തുമുള്ള ജലസേചനസൌകര്യമുള്ള കൃഷിയിടങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നുള്ള വരുമാനമാണ് പുരാതനകാലത്ത് ഈ നഗരത്തിന്റെ വികാസത്തിന് കാരണമായത്. സമീപത്തെ ബദാഖ്ശാൻ കുന്നുകളിലെ വിലപിടിച്ച കല്ലുകളുടെ ഖനികളും നഗരത്തിന്റെ പ്രശസ്തി വർദ്ധിപ്പിച്ചു. കൊട്ടാരത്തിനടുത്തുള്ള ഖജനാവിൽ നിന്ന് agate, beryl, carnelian, garnet, ലാപിസ് ലസൂലി, onyx, മുത്ത്, പവിഴം, turquoise തുടങ്ങി വിവിധതരം കല്ലുകളുടെ അവശിഷ്ടവും കണ്ടെടുത്തിട്ടുണ്ട്. ബി.സി.ഇ. 278 കാലത്തെ ചില ഗ്രീക്ക് ലിഖിതരേഖകളും ചരിത്രകാരന്മാർ ഇവിടെ നിന്നും കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. പാപിറസിലും തുകലിലും കൽപ്പാളികളിലും (ostraca) എഴുതപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുള്ള ഗ്രീക്ക് ലിഖിതങ്ങളും ഇവിടെ നിന്ന് കിട്ടിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഇതിൽ അരിസ്റ്റോട്ടിലിലിന്റെ ഒരു രചനയും ഉൾപ്പെടും[1].
