Līdz 1945. gadam pilsēta ietilpa Vācijā, bet, pamatojoties uz Potsdamas konferences lēmumiem, pilsēta tika piešķirta Polijai, bet pilsētas vācu iedzīvotāji padzīti.
1985. gada renovācijas darbu laikā pilsēta atrada Srodas depozītu (Skarb średzki). Viduslaiku greznu priekšmetu vidū bija zelta kronis, kura iespējs piederējusi Svētās Romas impērijas imperatora Kārļa IV sievai Blanšai Valuā (1317 - 1348).
