Pāvilosta ir ostas pilsēta Latvijas rietumos, Dienvidkurzemes novadā pie Sakas upes ietekas Baltijas jūrā 240 km attālumā no Rīgas (180 km taisnā līnijā), 44 km attālumā no novada centra Grobiņas, 54 km (40 km) uz ziemeļiem no Liepājas, 70 km (60 km) uz dienvidiem no Ventspils un 80 jūras jūdzes (apm. 150 km) uz austrumiem no Gotlandes salas. Pāvilostas osta ir viena no Latvijas mazajām ostām.

Pāvilosta atrodas senās kuršu Piemares ostas Sakas vietā, kas pirmo reizi minēta 1253. gada 4. aprīļa līgumā, ko noslēdza Kurzemes bīskaps Heinrihs un Livonijas ordeņa mestrs. Pēc tam tā nokļuva Kurzemes bīskapijas teritorijā, bet no 1795. gada Sakas osta (Sackenhausen) bija Kurzemes guberņas teritorijā.[3]
1879. gada 16. maijā Upesmuižas īpašnieks Oto fon Lilienfelds (Otto Friedrich von Lilienfeld), vēloties izveidot ostu, Sakas upes grīvā svinīgā ceremonijā iemūrēja loču mājas pamatakmeni un tajā pašā dienā iesvētīšanas ceremonijā nākamā pilsēta tika nokristīta viņa brāļa, Kurzemes gubernatora Paula fon Lilienfelda (Paul von Lilienfeld, Павел Лилиенфелд) par Paulshafen jeb Pāvilostu. O. Lilienfelds nākamās pilsētas teritorijā iznomāja apbūves gabalus, taču viņa apbūves plāns sākumā īstenojās lēni. Desmit gadu laikā tika uzbūvētas vien desmit mājas. Ostu izmantoja tikai daži zvejnieki, trīs nelieli muižas burinieki un velkonis, kas ar Upesmuižas precēm apgādāja Liepājas tirgu.
Pāvilostas attīstībai jaunu impulsu deva Liepājas kara ostas būvniecības uzsākšana 1893. gadā. No Pāvilostas apkārtnes uz Liepāju pa jūru tika vesti būvniecībai nepieciešamie akmeņi. Sakas upes grīva tika pielāgota akmeņu pārkraušanai un Pāvilostā no tuvas un tālas apkārtnes ieradās ostas celtnieki, strādnieki, krāvēji, jūrnieki, namdari un tirgoņi. Kad akmeņi vairs netika transportēti, Pāvilostā jau bija attīstījusies kuģniecība, zvejniecība, tirdzniecība un kuģubūve.
Līdz Pirmajam pasaules karam Pāvilostā pastāvēja trīs kuģubūvētavas, kurās būvēja nelielus buru kuģus — vienmastu "malkas jančus", kā arī divmastu gafelšonerus tālākiem reisiem. Šajā laikā Pāvilostā tika uzbūvēti 15 kuģi. Pēc kara kuģu būvniecība vairs netika atjaunota. Pasaules kara laikā Pāvilostas motorlaivas un kuģi tika gan nogremdēti, gan pārdoti, gan konfiscēti. Pēc kara Pāvilostā no 26 motorlaivām bija palikušas tikai 2, no 26 buriniekiem — 4. Ostas tirdzniecība apsīka. Par ostas galvenajiem izmantotājiem un ciemata ekonomisko pamatu kļuva zvejnieki, kuru lomus uzpircēji un 1930. gadā dibinātais zvejnieku kooperatīvs pārdeva Aizputē, Skrundā un Saldū.
1940. gadā, sākoties padomju okupācijai, zvejnieki piespiedu kārtā tika apvienoti artelī, kuram 1947. gadā tika dots nosaukums "Dzintarjūra". 1944./1945. gadā, vairoties no atkārtotas padomju varas, vairāki zvejnieki, līdzi ņemot ģimenes un draugus, motorlaivās aizbēga uz Zviedriju. Līdz 1949. gadam, kad artelis iegādājās pirmos zvejas kuģus, Pāvilostā zvejoja ar motorlaivām. 1951. gadā artelis pārtapa par zvejnieku kolhozu "Dzintarjūra", kas 1975. gadā tika pievienots Liepājas zvejnieku kolhozam "Boļševiks", kļūstot par tā Pāvilostas nodaļu. 1970. gadu beigās — kolhoza ziedu laikos Pāvilostā ir ap 20 zvejas traleru. 1990. gadā zvejnieku kolhozs "Boļševiks" tika pārdēvēts par zvejnieku kopsaimniecību "Kursa", kuras Pāvilostas nodaļa 1994. gadā atdalījās, izveidojot akciju sabiedrību "Pāvilosta". Vairums ar akciju sabiedrību "Pāvilosta" nesaistīto zvejnieku šobrīd atkal zvejo ar motorlaivām.
Pāvilostai ir sava himna, kura sacerēta 1999. gadā. Mūzikas autors ir pāvilostnieks Uldis Marhilēvičs, tekstu sarakstījis Guntars Račs.[4]
2006. gadā ostā izbūvēja jahtu piestātni Pāvilosta Marina un 128 metrus garu zvejas piestātni. 2010. gadā pilnībā rekonstruēja Pāvilostas ostas molus, atjaunojot vēsturiskās bākas molu galos un veica ostas akvatorija padziļināšanas darbi līdz 4,5 metru dziļumam. Pašlaik Ziemeļu mola garums ir 287 metri, Dienvidu mola – 297,5 metri. 2011. gadā Sakas upes labajā krastā rekonstruēja viesjahtu piestātni un izbūvēja 90 m garu daudzfunkcionālu piestātni, kas atļauj Pāvilostas ostā ienākt neliela izmēra pasažieru prāmjiem.[5]
Lai arī 1913. gadā Pāvilostai piešķīra sašaurinātas pilsētas pašvaldības tiesības un 1930. gadā Saeimas Pašvaldību komisija nobalsoja par pilsētas tiesību piešķiršanu Pāvilostai (iedzīvotāju domas par šo soli dalījās), no 1925. gada līdz Otrajam pasaules karam Pāvilosta administratīvā izpratnē bija Sakas pagasta biezi apdzīvota vieta.[6] 1945.—1949. gadā Pāvilosta bija ciems Sakas pagastā, 1950.—1951. gadā — daļa no Pāvilostas ciema, 1952.—1961. gadā strādnieku ciemats, 1961.—1991. gads — pilsētciemats. Pilsētas tiesības Pāvilosta ieguva 1991. gada 28. novembrī.[7] No 2009. līdz 2021. gadam pilsēta bija Pāvilostas novada centrs.
