1813. gada oktobrī Marklēbergas vietā notika liela daļa no Leipcigas kaujas gaitas. Pilsēta izveidota 1934. gadā, apvienojot Ečas-Marklēbergas un Graučas ciemus.
Pie pilsētas, pie ezera, kas izveidots bijušā brūnogļu karjera vietā, izveidota mākslīgā kanoe slaloma trase Kanupark Markkleeberg.
Marklēberga ir riteņbraucēja Roberta Ferstera (Robert Förster, 1978) dzimtā pilsēta.
