Suleimanas buvo Kutulmišo, kuris nesėkmingai kovojo su savo pusbroliu Alp Arslanu dėl Seldžiukų imperijos sosto, sūnus. Kai 1064 m. Kutulmišas mirė, Suleimanas su trimis broliais pabėgo į Tauro kalnus ir ten ieškojo prieglobsčio pas turkmėnų gentis, gyvenusias už imperijos ribų. Alp Arslanas į tai atsakė prieš juos surengdamas keletą baudžiamųjų puolimų. Suleimanas vienintelis iš keturių brolių išgyveno šiuos antpuolius ir sugebėjo įtvirtinti savo valdžią turkmėnams.[2]
