Oficialios Indijos kalbos skirstomos į dvi grupes:
- centrinės administracijos oficialios kalbos – hindi ir anglų kalba (oficiali „papildoma“ arba „asocijuota“ kalba);
- kitos 22 konstitucijoje nurodytos kalbos (angliškai scheduled languages), turinčios oficialų statusą tam tikrose Indijos valstijose.
Anglų kalba lygiaverčio statuso nebeturi nuo 1965 m. – nuo to laiko valstybės tikslas yra palaipsniui visiškai pakeisti anglų kalbų hindi kalba. Nepaisant to, pramonės plėtra ir globalizacija lemia tai, kad anglų kalbos reikšmė išlieka didelė.
