Gorochovecas – senovinis rusų miestas, išlaikęs tradicinę architektūrą. Yra XVII a. Šv. Mikalojaus, Šv. Viešpaties Sutikimo, Šv. Dievo Motinos Ženklo ikonos vienuolynai, Gerosios Naujienos soboras, XVII–XX a. pr. pasaulietinė architektūra (pirklių, dvarininkų namai, visuomeniniai pastatai).
VI a. dabartinio miesto vietoje būta finougrų, o nuo X–XI a. – slavų gyvenvietės. Greičiausiai, miestą 1168 m. įkūrė Andrejus Bogoliubskis kaip karinę tvirtovę žygiams į Volgos Bulgariją. Gorochovecas šaltiniuose minimas nuo 1239 m.[1], kai jį sugriovė mongolai-totoriai. XIV a. pab. – XV a. pr. priklausė Maskvos kunigaikštystei. 1539 m. miestą vėl nusiaubė totoriai, o 1619 m. – kazokai. XVII–XVIII a. pradėti statyti vienuolynai, suklestėjo amatai (ypač odų apdirbimas), spirito varymas. XIX a. pab. įsteigta laivų statykla.
1960 m. kelyje žuvo dviračių žygio „Klaipėda – Vladivostokas“ organizatorius Liudas Alseika.
