Ceiba pentandra (binomen ab Iosepho Gaertner post Linnaeum anno 1791 statutum) est species arborum excelsissimorum, Media in America sponte crescentium, ibi alibique sub climate tropico cultorum praecipue propter fibras quibus semina intra fructus continentur. Latinitate communi lanifera arbor appellatur. Haec arbor in religione Maya sacra habetur, textilia praebens, foliis altis radicibusque profundis caelum et inferna cum tellure iungens.
Antonius ab Herrera primus Europaeorum in descriptione Nicaraguae sic anno 1601 scripsit: "Ay en ella muchas arboledas, porque crecen mucho los arboles, y el que llaman 'zeyba' engruessa tanto, que quinze hombres asidos de las maños no le pueden abraçar." Semina Ceibae aut pentandrae aut aliae cum cacao ad potionem mixtam conficiendam ab Aztecis adhibiti sunt.[1]
