Abugida sive alphasyllabarium[1] est systema scripturae quo vocales notandae sunt, sed eorum forma consonantibus nititur. Abugida ab abjad? et abecedario differt, videlicet in hoc vocales et consonantes aequiter scribuntur, in illo vocales interdum scribi vel omnino neglegi possunt.
Neologismus abugida, in lingua Anglica a Petro T. Daniels anno 1990 fictus,[2] de nomine Aethiopico (አቡጊዳ vel ’ä bu gi da) scripturae suae Ge'ez, quae est scilicet abugida, ducitur; is est verbum primarum quattuor litterarum compositum eadem ratione qua primae quattuor litterae a be ce de reddunt verbum abecedarium.
