En astronomía, época, tamén chamada época das coordenadas, e unha data precisa a que fan referencia as coordenadas celestes calculadas para as estrelas. Tendo como orixe do termo o feito de que algúns dos movementos da Terra perceptibles, tales como o xiro sobre o seu eixo (día) e o xiro ó redor do Sol (ano) e outros no tan perceptibles, coñecidos co nome de precesión e nutación, enténdese logo que as coordenadas estelares muden, aínda que de xeito moi imperceptible, cada ano. Por esta razón resulta oportuno facer referencia a un preciso instante de tempo para o seu cálculo.
A época das coordenadas mais en uso nos actuais atlas celestes e nas Efemérides e o J2000.0, que fixa como referencia o 1 de xaneiro de 2000 ás 12:00 TT. O prefixo "J" ven a indicar que e Época Xuliana. O estándar anterior foi B1950.0, co prefixo "B" indicando que era Época besseliana.
As épocas besselianas foron empregadas antes de 1984 e na actualidade empréganse nos cálculos astronómicos só épocas xulianas.
