A illa Bathurst (2.600 km²[1] é unha das illas Tiwi xunto coa illa Melville, que se atopa no leste do Mar de Timor, na costa do Territorio do Norte en Australia. Sitúase tamén ó oeste da Terra de Arnhem e ó norte de Darwin.

O principal asentamento da illa é Wurrumiyanga (coñecida como Nguiu até o 2010), que concentra a práctica totalidade dos habitantes, uns 1.450,[2] e se atopa no sueste da illa, Wurrumiyanga está aproximadamente a 70 km ao norte de Darwin. A segunda vila é Wurakuwu que conta con preto de 50 habitantes está ao noroeste de Wurrumiyanga. O terceiro asentamento na illa é unha pequena familia denominada 4 Mile Camp, a uns 6 km ao oeste de Wurrumiyanga.
Ó igual que a súa veciña, a illa Melville, Barthust é o fogar do pobo tiwi, que constitúe a meirande parte da poboación de ámbalas dúas illas. Nos últimos anos, Barthust converteuse nun lugar de interese turístico debido á posta en valor da cultura tiwi, mais fai falla un permiso especial para visitala. A illa está comunicada cun aeroporto.
A illa foi nomeada así por Henry Bathurst, 3º Conde de Bathurst, que, como o vizconde Melville, tamén é lembrado pola illa canadense. De 1910 a 1938, a illa foi o sitio da misión católica de Francis Xavier Gsell, coñecido como o "bispo con 150 esposas" pola súa práctica de "comprar" ás nenas prometidas a homes maiores, polo tanto permitíndolles casar con homes da súa mesma idade.[3]
Durante o bombardeo de Darwin, a primeira formación de 188 avións xaponeses foi descuberta polo pai John McGrath, un sacerdote católico que realizaba traballos misioneiros na misión da illa Bathurst. O Pai McGrath enviou unha mensaxe por radio dicindo: "Unha formación aérea infrecuentemente grande aproxímase a nós desde o noroeste". Case todos ignoraron a mensaxe, aínda que estaba na estación de radio máis popular. Ao redor dunha hora máis tarde houbo aproximadamente 100 persoas mortas, pero as persoas que seguiron as súas instrucións sobreviviron. Darwin recibiu esta advertencia polo menos dúas veces por radio, como moi tarde ás 9:37 horas. Pero como, 11 Curtiss P-40 Warhawk dos Estados Unidos e un Consolidated B-24 Liberator despegaran de Darwin pouco antes, o oficial de quenda australiano asumiu que esta era a mesma formación. As advertencias non se tomaron en conta, como en Pearl Harbor, dous meses antes, e a última oportunidade de Darwin de prepararse a última hora para a inminente incursión esvaeceuse.
