Juan Sebastián Elcano, tamén escrito Juan Sebastián de Elcano, nado en Getaria, Guipúscoa, entre 1486 e 1487 e finado no océano Pacífico o 4 de agosto de 1526, foi un explorador español que participou na primeira expedición que deu a volta ao planeta Terra, e capitaneou os derradeiros compases desta.

Esta comezara en Sevilla o 10 de agosto de 1519 con cinco naves, capitaneada por Fernão de Magalhães. O 20 de setembro partiran de Sanlúcar de Barrameda (provincia de Cádiz) coa intención de atopar o paso marítimo cara aos territorios das Indias Orientais, e buscar o camiño que, percorrendo sempre mares casteláns (segundo o Tratado de Tordesillas), chegase ás illas das especias, o que era a chamada ruta para o oeste, que xa buscara Colón.
Tras a morte de Magalhães en Filipinas en 1521 durante unha escaramuza cos indíxenas, Elcano púxose ao mando. Tiña o problema de volver a España co que quedaba da expedición, sen coñecer o camiño de volta polo Pacífico, e parecía tolemia intentalo, polo que elixiu navegar, case como un pirata, polos mares portugueses cara ao oeste, bordeando África por rutas coñecidas e con posibilidades de facer augadas. Conseguiu levar a termo a expedición, chegando a Sanlúcar de Barrameda o 6 de setembro de 1522 na nao Victoria de noventa toneladas[1], xunto con outros 17 sobreviventes. Isto constituíu o logro dunha impoñente fazaña: a circunnavegación da Terra.
O rei Carlos I de España, concedeulle como escudo unha esfera do mundo coa lenda en latín: Primus circumdedisti me ("Fuches o primeiro en me circundar").
Morreu cando participaba na expedición de García Jofre de Loaísa ás Illas Molucas.
Na súa honra, o buque escola da Armada Española leva o seu nome.
Estes dezaoito homes regresaron a Sanlúcar na Vitoria en 1522 e está o letreiro posto na fachada do concello de Sanlúcar de Barrameda
