Étymologie

Du moyen breton brezell^[1][2], issu du proto-celtique *briktilos, diminutif de *briktos (d’où brizh), dérivé de brikkos « marbré, tacheté »^[3], d’où brec’h « variole ».

À rapprocher du cornique brithel « maquereau », gallois brithyll « truite » et irlandais breac, de même sens.
