Dans le domaine des oligochètes terrestres, ou vers de terre, l'ouvrage très complet d'Edwards et Bohlen (1996) fait figure de référence depuis de nombreuses années. En France, l'unique ouvrage étendu sur le sujet est celui de Bouché (1972). La principale référence quant aux niveaux supérieurs de la classification des vers de terre est celle de Sims (1980), en attendant probablement de futurs éclairages en provenance de la biologie moléculaire. Pour les oligochètes aquatiques, la référence incontestée au niveau international est l'ouvrage de Brinkhurst et Jamieson de 1971.

Les Merostomata sont presque tous des organismes fossiles. Les seuls représentants du groupe encore vivants aujourd'hui font partie de l'ordre des Xiphosura.
La littérature francophone concernant les myriapodes reste relativement pauvre. Les ouvrages de la collection Faune de France, bien qu'anciens, sont d'un excellent niveau et accessibles gratuitement sur internet. Aujourd'hui cependant, l'ouvrage Les mille-pattes de J.M. Demange représente l'une des principales références utilisées autant par les amateurs éclairés que par les spécialistes.
