Historiansa aikana Vukovar on kuulunut Kroatiaan, Bulgariaan, Osmanien valtakuntaan, Itävalta-Unkariin ja Jugoslaviaan. Kaupungin nimi tulee Vuka-joesta sekä unkarin kielen linnaa tarkoittavasta sanasta vár. Kroatian sodassa serbijoukot hävittivät kaupungin lähes maan tasalle ja tappoivat runsaasti siviileitä Vukovarin piirityksessä.[1] Piirityksessä pahaa tuhoa kärsinyt kaupungin vesitorni on jätetty ennalleen sodan muistomerkiksi.[2]
Vukovarin asukasluku oli vuoden 2011 väestönlaskennan mukaan 27 683. Asukkaista kroaatteja oli 57,4 prosenttia ja serbejä 34,9 prosenttia. Lisäksi kaupungissa asuu runsaasti muita kansallisuuksia.[3]
