Kaupungin historia alkaa 300-luvulta eaa. Roomalaiset, saksalaiset ja unkarilaiset ovat vuorotellen hallinneet kaupunkia. 1300-luvulta 1700-luvulle kaupunki kukoisti Transilvanian saksalaisten käsityömestarien kotikaupunkina. Ensimmäisen maailmansodan jälkeen se siirtyi Itävalta-Unkarilta Romanialle.
Sighișoaran hyvin säilynyt muurin suojaama keskiaikainen vanhakaupunki on Unescon maailmanperintökohde.[2]
Taruhahmo Draculan esikuvana pidetty ruhtinas Vlad Țepeș syntyi Sighișoarassa.
