Ezaugarri nagusiak bere ur gorriak ditu, bere arroan dauden metal astun sulfuroen meteorizazioak sortuak. Prozedura hau acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans edo Leptospirillum ferrooxidans eta beste bakterio azidofilek egiten dute.[2] Eskualdeko herri guztiek (iberiar, feniziar, erromatar eta musulmanek) bere arroko meategiak ustiatu zituzten baina XIX. mendetik aurrera britainiar enpresek eskala handian egiten dute.
Iparraldetik hegoalderantz Nerva, Minas de Riotinto, El Campillo, Zalamea la Real, Berrocal, Valverde del Camino, Paterna del Campo, Niebla, La Palma del Condado, Villarrasa, Bonares, Trigueros, Lucena del Puerto, San Juan del Puerto, Moguer, Palos de la Frontera eta Huelva udalerriak zeharkatzen ditu.
Bere uren pH azido da oso (1,7 eta 2,5 artekoa).[3] Hori dela eta, NASAk ikerketak egin zituen bertan Marterako bidaiak egiteko.[4]
