Turist on Maailma Turismiorganisatsiooni määratlusel inimene, kes reisib väljapoole tavapärast elukeskkonda jäävatesse kohtadesse kauemaks kui 24 tunniks, kuid mitte kauemaks kui aastaks puhkuse, äri või muudel eesmärkidel, mis pole seotud külastatavas paigas tasustatava tegevusega.[1]

Mõistet turist kasutatakse:
Turistid on enamasti heatahtlikud, sõbralikud ja uudishimulikud, nende sooviks on suhelda kohalikega, samuti õppida tundma nende kultuuri, kombeid ja tavasid. Neid huvitab, kuidas eri maade inimesed räägivad, mida söövad ja joovad ning kuidas elavad. Turistid tahavad end tunda teretulnuna, nad tunnevad end halvasti ja rahulolematult, kui nad kohtuvad ebasõbralike kohalikega või kui neid ei mõisteta. Samuti peaks iga turist andma omapoolse panuse, et kohalikud inimesed suhtuksid neisse sõbralikult ja tunneksid end hästi. Neil tuleb väärtustada ja austada kohalikke elanikke. Samuti nende kultuuri, kombeid ja tavasid. Turistid peavad hoidma kohalikku keskkonda ja pärandit. Nad peavad vältima inimestele ohtlikke harrastusi ja ühiskonnas taunitavaid tegevusi. Külastajatel on suur osatähtsus keskkonna, majanduse ja kultuuriväärtuste jätkusuutliku arengu toetamisel. Tähtis on see, et iga turist oskaks väärikalt ja õigesti käituda. See väljendub austuses kohaliku elu-olu ja inimeste vastu, siiras huvitumises eri kultuuridest, ka loodust ja muid ressursse (vett, elektrit) säästvas majandamises. Et reisil olla hea turist, tuleb õppida turistiks olemist ning vastutada oma käitumise ja tegude eest.[3]
Turism tähendab väga paljude inimeste liikumist. Seda nii lühi- kui ka pikaajalist viibimist ühes või teises sihtkohas. See toob kaasa mitmesuguseid kokkupuuteid kohalike elanike ja sealse keskkonnaga. Turistide mõju kohalikule majandusele on suur. Nad tihti ei mõtle sellele, millist mõju avaldab nende viibimine kohalikule keskkonnale ja inimestele. Vahel võivad turistid käituda ebaviisakalt ja hoolimatult. Psühholoogid seletavad asja sellega, et inimestel on kalduvus käituda võõrastes paikades teisiti kui koduses keskkonnas. Inimesed võivad tahta igapäevarutiinist vabanemiseks puhata tavalisest teistmoodi. See aitab rohkem lõõgastuda ning puhkus tundub efektiivsem. Turistid võivad võtta sellise hoiaku, et nad on reisi eest maksnud ja neile on kõik lubatud. Mõned võivad liialdada alkoholiga, käituda ebaviisakalt, närviliselt ja kapriisselt. Samuti on neid, kes ei hooli kohalikest tavadest, näiteks jätta enda järel maha prügi, raisata mõtlematult vett ja teisi ressursse. Paraku tuleb turismikohtadel ja ettevõtjatel kokku puutuda ka selliste turistidega, kelle põhihuvid võivad seonduda prostitutsiooni, narkomaania ja teiste ühiskonnale ning inimestele ohtlike ja hukkamõistu pälvivate tegevustega.[3]
Reisijaid ja turiste hakati liigitama juba enne teist maailmasõda. Selle aja välismaalastest reisijate ja turistide reisimist nimetati üldnimetusega võõraste liikumine. Aletta J. Norval liigitas reisijad kolme klassi:

Esimesse klassi kuuluvad reisijad on enamikus vabatahtlikud, äriasjus reisijad aga mittevabatahtlikud. Kolmas klass hõlmab mõlemat liiki reisijaid.[4]

Igas turismipiirkonnas on välja kujunenud turistid ja situatsioonid, millest sõltuvalt piirkond areneb. Selline mõistmine on kaasa toonud mitmeid katseid määratleda alternatiivseid turismistruktuure. Stephen Williams on struktureerinud turiste ja turismitüüpe eri kategooriatesse eri tunnuste alusel.

Turiste on võimalik iseloomustada üldistatud tüüpidena. Williams eristab nelja turistitüüpi:

Williamsi tüüpi liigitus on problemaatiline, kuna see ei võta arvesse üha suurenevat puhkuseliikide ja -kohtade valikut. Neid aspekte arvestavalt töötas Plog välja ühe populaarsema turismitüüpide teooria, mis põhineb USA elanikkonnal. Plog identifitseeris kaks vastandlikku turismitüüpi. Allocentric on turistid, kes ootavad oma puhkuselt seiklusi ja on valmis võtma riske. Nad eelistavad puhkusi eksootilistesse paikadesse ning eelistavad reisida iseseisvalt. Skaala teises otsas on psychocentric. Need turistid pööravad tähelepanu pigem vaimsele poolele ja koondavad mõtted väikestele probleemidele elus. Puhkusel ei ole nad seiklushimulised, üldjuhul eelistavad asukohti, mis sarnanevad nende koduse keskkonnaga. Sellised turistid võivad korduvalt tagasi reisida samadesse sihtkohtadesse, kus nad on kogenud meeldivaid kogemusi ja kus nad tunnevad end turvaliselt, kuna koht on tuttav.[7]
Kuigi Plogi tüpoloogia esindab lihtsalt mudelit, mis selgitab mingil määral turismi motivatsiooni aspekte, on mõningaid raskusi selle rakendamisel. Näiteks on see, et nii turistid kui ka sihtkohad aja jooksul muutuvad. Nooruk võib olla allocentric teatud eluetappidel ja muutuda näiteks siis, kui perre sünnivad lapsed.[7]
Turismiuurijad on välja töötanud süsteeme, kuidas määratleda turiste, kuid suur osa tööst põhines mitteempiirilistel uuringutel ja alles 1980. aastal hakkasid teadlased kvantitatiivsete uuringute abil turistidemotivatsiooni kirjeldama.[8]
