Usage notes

• When referring to Traditional Chinese characters, both 繁體字／繁体字 (fántǐzì) and 正體字／正体字 (zhèngtǐzì) are widely used in Taiwan and Hong Kong, with 正體字／正体字 (zhèngtǐzì) recommended by Taiwan government.
• Sometimes 正體字 refers specifically to Taiwan standard forms or historically standard forms, and the nonstandard forms are called 異體字／异体字 (yìtǐzì, “variant”) or 俗字 (súzì, “popular form”), or 簡體字／简体字 (jiǎntǐzì) if it is a simplified form.
  • E.g. in Taiwan, 臺 is as a 正體字, while 台 is a 異體字 or 俗字. Hong Kong standard recommends 台 instead, but 臺 is still seen as a 正體字 due to its historical orthodoxy.
  • But in some cases, the current Taiwan standard form of a character may be a historically nonstandard one, which makes what is a 正體字 ambiguous. E.g. 裏 used to be standard and 裡 nonstandard; but Taiwan standard adopted 裡. In this case, the Taiwan standard form can be referred to as 國字標準字體／国字标准字体.
• Regardless of simplified or not, when referring to a character that conforms to the orthography, it is used as a concept opposite to 異體字／异体字 (yìtǐzì, “variant”).
  • E.g. 回 (huí) is the 正體字/正体字 form of 囬. 場／场 (chǎng) are the 正體字/正体字 forms of 塲.
