Phono-semantic compound: in the version on bronzes, semantic 止 ("footprint") + phonetic 王 ("ritual axe made of jade"). Compare the top component of 出 and 岁. Its original meaning was "to go"; original version of 𢓸 (then stylized into 往) and inner component of 匩 > 匡.
According to Xu Shen, compound 之 + 土; however, his interpretations are not based on oracle bones and bronzes. Another ancient meaning, according to Xu Shen, was "undesired grass" (e.g., grass growing where it should grow, such as in front of a door).
㞷 is similar but unrelated to 𡴀 > 丰. It is also similar but unrelated to 𤯓 > 生.
