Singularized plural of Old Albanian thas, from Proto-Albanian *tsatja, from Proto-Indo-European *ket-. Compare Serbo-Croatian kòtac (cattle-shed, weir), Latin catinus (bowl), Old English heaþor (enclosure, jail).[1]
