Borrowed from Low German Stempel or Dutch stempel, akin to Old English stempan (“to stamp”), all from Proto-West Germanic *stampōn, from Proto-Germanic *stampōną (“to compress, squeeze, stamp”).
stempel (plural stempels)
From Middle Low German stempel, from stampen.
stempel n (singular definite stemplet, plural indefinite stempler)
Corresponding to stampen (“to stamp”) + -el (suffix denoting instruments), but clearly an early formation judging by the presence of umlaut. Compare Old High German stempfil (German Stempel).
stempel m or n (plural stempels, diminutive stempeltje n) (neuter when used in senses 2 and 3)
