From Arabic شَطْرَنْج (šaṭranj), from Early Classical Persian چَتْرَنْگ (čatrang), from Middle Persian 𐭰𐭠𐭲𐭫𐭠𐭭𐭢 (ctlng /čatrang/), from Sanskrit चतुरङ्ग (caturaṅga).
