From Arabic شَطْرَنْج (šaṭranj), from Persian شترنگ (šatrang), from Middle Persian 𐭰𐭠𐭲𐭫𐭠𐭭𐭢 (ctlng /čatrang/), from Sanskrit चतुरङ्ग (caturaṅga).
