Etymology
Probably ris- + -u, from risahtaa, thus onomatopoeic of the snapping sound made by dry twigs. Germanic origin has been proposed (compare Icelandic hrís (“brushwood”) and Swedish ris (“twigs in a heap”)), but considered unlikely for phonetic reasons.[1][2]
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈrisu/, [ˈris̠u]
- Rhymes: -isu
- Syllabification(key): ri‧su
Noun
risu
- stick, dry twig
- brickbat (criticism or uncomplimentary remark)
Aikakauslehdissä on usein "ruusuja ja risuja" -niminen osasto kehuja ja kritiikkiä varten.- It's quite common for magazines to have a section called Bouquets and Brickbats for compliments and criticisms.
