Inherited from Middle High German rasten, from Old High German rastōn, from Proto-West Germanic *rastōn (“to rest”), equivalent to Rast + -en. Cognate with Middle Low German rasten (“to rest”), dialectal Dutch rasten (“to rest”), Saterland Frisian räästje (“to rest”), Middle English rasten (“to rest”).
