hoquet (countable and uncountable, plural hoquets)
Inherited from Middle French hoquet, icquet (“hiccup”), probably of Germanic origin, ultimately onomatopoeic. Compare Old Norse hixta (“to hiccup”), Middle High German heschezen, heschitzen (“to gulp, burp, sob”), Middle Dutch hicken (“to hiccup”), obsolete English hicket, hyckock (“hiccup”). More at hiccup.
