From Proto-Italic *findō, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰinédti (“to be splitting”), from the root *bʰeyd-. Cognate with Ancient Greek φείδομαι (pheídomai), Sanskrit भिद् (bhid, “to break”), Old English bītan (English bite).
