From Middle High German pfūchen, phūchen, from Old High German *pfūhhan (“to spit, puff”), from Proto-Germanic *pukaną (“to spit, puff”), from Proto-Indo-European *bew- (“to blow, swell”). The modern onset f- instead of pf- is from East Central German. Compare English puke.
