From Middle English bireaden, bereden, biræden, from Old English berǣdan (“to deprive, take by treachery, rob; betray; deliberate on, consult about, advise; get the better of”), equivalent to be- + rede. Cognate with Saterland Frisian beräide (“to advise”), Middle Low German birāden (“to deliberate, consider”), German Low German beraden (“to advise”), German beraten (“to advise, deliberate”).
